Thank you for sharing so freely and beautifully with passing strangers. God blessed you with a kind soul that was easily recognized by the angels that greeted you when you arrived among them as one of their own.

Now, the sky is on flame with Rock And Roll...Dirk est parti prématurément.

When I first discovered the wonderful world of BLOGS Dirk had just passed away, I never knew him but it was clear that he was loved and came across as a sweet, genuine and lovely guy.

Now down the line I find myself fighting the same fight, just finished my chemo an am hoping for surgery soon. The support I found from my friends and loved ones has been great and helped me in the fight. my "cyber" friends have played no small part in this fight. so know how much all your support meant to Dirk.

Dirk R.I.P.
It is with great sadness we learned that our great blog-friend Dirk passed away this week after fighting for his life for a long time.Dirk (from Friesland, The Netherlands) was a great source when it came to music from Japan. We think he knew more about the history of of Japanese pop, folk and rock than any average citizen from Japan does. Thanks for all you taught us.Dirk wrote about his illness on his blog very open. We knew the chemo therapy workt well. it came as a shock to read his mother's words that he had gone.Dirk, we hope you may find peace wherever you are,For those who want to want to contribute to his memorial : go here.

I came across this blog while looking for information about Morita Douji, a now-obscure Japanese folk singer. I looked through some of the archives and was intrigued by them. It was clear that the writer of this blog must be a very interesting person, one I would have liked to have corresponded with on the subject of our mutual interest. He looks like a very nice guy to me- you can't always judge a book by its cover, but some faces have a certain warmth to them. I'm sorry for your loss. Your son looks like the sort of man I would have liked to have known, and wrote like one. I know that nothing can make right your loss- the world can be an inexplicably sad place. But I hope that it is some consolation to know that your son was a man able to inspire regard from many people. You can count me in that number.

Dirk jó srác lehetett a blog alapján.

Funeral for a Friend
Via WFMU, a sad story that also highlights the power of the net.Last summer more than a hundred people attended the funeral of a young man from Dokkum in the Dutch province of Friesland and now you can too. His parents have posted a highlight video online. That this most private of moments from a far-off stranger's life could be put on display in such a manner may seem perverse, but for hundreds, maybe thousands of people around the world, watching this footage is a sweet and tearful conclusion to an odd sort of friendship made possible by the Internet and a shared love of music.

“Fight Against the Plutocrats” blogster Dirk has passed away - Rest in Peace
By Oliver / Cult Punk

Dirk was a writer, an mp3 blogger, punk rock music fanatic, and dedicated spreader-of-the-word for under appreciated bands. Dirk ran the well-named blog Fight Against the Plutocrats which, in a recent “Weekly Punk Blog Roundup” post on this website, I linked to; it had a great archive of scans of old MRR issues and a good G-Zet discography. On August 1st, Dirk passed away, a cancer victim at only 19. He will be sorely missed.
I was subscribed to his blog through an RSS feed. Knowing that it will no longer be updated by him is more than sad. Looking at Dirk’s blog now, and reading his music “Want” list (the “Tokyo Rockers” LP, the “Tokyo’s Burning” LP and plenty of stuff by The Stalin), is almost enough to put a lump in one’s throat. I hope that wherever Dirk is he’s hearing all the music he’s ever wanted to hear.
Dirk was terribly young but one wouldn’t know it from reading his posts. I had no idea he was terribly ill. He never talked about it much; music was what he was all about. His site was an invaluable resource of information. And he was smart, too: “Fight Against the Plutocrats,” the title itself, showed how much he had taken to heart punk’s rebellious attitude against elites and powerful folk who do so much to fuck up our world.
You can leave comments in memory of Dirk at THIS BLOG (”Cities on Flame,” his other blog). His parents have posted there and appreciate any sentiments in the “Comments” area from folks who knew him through his online writings. Below was my post. Of course, when something like this happens, it’s hard to ever say enough.

Unfortunately I didn't discover Cities on Flame.. until after Dirk's death, but as a fellow music blogger, I can tell you from personal experience that this man touched thousands of lives around the world. I'm sure that to you he touched you for more personal reasons, and my heart goes out to you for your loss. Judging from his musical taste I'm sure he was a very special person.

Waren zij jou gegeven gewicht

Die mooie gele zonnebloemen
Je nam ze mee op reis
Ze zullen eeuwig blijven bloeien
Bij jou in het paradijs.

vrijdag 7 maart 2008

Zeven maal
Zeven maal om de aarde gaan
als het zou moeten
op handen en voeten
zeven maal
zeven maal
Geboren, geleefd, gestorven
Plots was mijn hart zo leeg
Mijn ogen vele tranen
Ik moest je laten gaan
Nu is er enkel die lege plaats
Geboren, geleefd, gestorven
ik kan niet meer voor je zorgen
De herinneringen die jij achterliet
Maar wat nooit zal verdwijnen
Is mijn verdriet
Ik wordt soms gek van verdriet
stoppen met huilen gaat haast niet
Jij hebt extra kleur aan mijn
leven gegeven
Waarom mocht jij niet langer
blijven leven

I was just informed that Dirk from Cities in flame blog passed away.I'm very socked and very sad, especially because i didn't have a chance to now him better(we just became friends about a couple of months ago).Rest in peace Dirk, sympathy to your family....Your spirit still leaves among us.See you on the other side pal....

nog een blog

Dear Cyberfriends
I am Dirk's mother, and Dirk asked me to keep you updated on how he isdoing. Well I have to tell you all some sad news, wednesday the 25th we went to the hospital for his 7th chemo, but as Dirk told you he wasn't feelingwell.
The doctors examined him and they found a huge tumor and fluid in hisleft lung, there is nothing that they can do for him anymore, the prognosisis that he only has a few weeks to live... At the moment it's going veryfast, day by day he is getting worse... Dirk asked me to tell you this, andthat when he passes away, he wants the comments to be used as a memorialregister, and then the blog will be closed. It will stay as a memorial inloving memory of Dirk.. Greetings and love from Dirk and his mom Janny.

I add this rare and totally fuzzed out album for him and you all cyberspacers who like fuzzed out rock... "White Boy and The Average Rat Band - Selftitled (Fuzzzz US 1980)" (The album has not been released on CD)

Great post, Doug. Of all the initial pioneering music blogs, few were as passionate as C.O.F. I am thankful for many additions to my music collection via Dirk.

Awesome. He posted so much good stuff on the COF blog.

Thanks for posting this. The COF blog turned me on to so much great music. Great to see Dirk on WFMU.

Cities On Flame.. was a great blog and Dirk will be greatly missed. Thanks for shining the spotlight on this.

Funeral for a Friend

Dirk Last summer more than a hundred people attended the funeral of a young man from Dokkum in the Dutch province of Friesland and now you can too.

Dirk Sietse Gjaltema died last August 1 before reaching his 20th birthday. On a Thursday in late March 2006, he started a blog called Cities on Flame With Rock and Roll on which he posted downloads of his favorite albums paired with charming and impassioned descriptions of them. Though the majority of his posts presented Japanese music—in June '06, he added a download of Anthology of Japanese New Folk, a terrific marathon premium from WFMU's Janitor From Mars—his adventuresome taste led readers through the acid folk, garage rock and psychedelia of Turkey, Korea, Brazil, his native Holland and many other wide-ranging outposts of progressive sounds. In early September, Dirk promised to put up a download of the rarity Zeer Oude Klanken En Heel Nieuwe Geluiden by the Dutch three-string guitar masher Eddy van der Meer, but the following post instead contained this stunner:

dear music friends i wont be posting new music for at least two weeks because i am in the hospital , i need a operation for my legg , becauce it is very bad with my legg a car hit me, and hurt my legg very badly, it would be very nice iff you send me a postcard.

Surprieze Back home a few days later, Dirk dutifully posted the album while also happening to mention that an MRI on his damaged leg revealed a tumor and he was due back in hospital for tests since "they don't know yet if its a good one or a bad one." Well, the tumor turned out to be Ewing's sarcoma, an aggressive form of bone cancer.

To_hospital_3 Over the next several months, checking in with Cities on Flame With Rock and Roll became increasingly harrowing as Dirk's posts alternated between impassioned offerings of obscure musical treats and matter-of-fact descriptions of what was happening to his body. One week you'd learn about some trippy Chilean hippy band, and the next get an unvarnished chronicle of a post-chemotherapy puking session. And yet each installment, no matter how bright or how grim came from Dirk always in the same unnervingly upbeat, enthusiastic tone.

On more than one occasion, Dirk's parents posted updates on his condition. Often they were just awful accounts of operations and bleeding and, ultimately, the amputation of Dirk's leg. And yet, through it all Dirk's irrepressibly cheerful nature would overshadow the ugliness. His post from November 24 reads

i got back home Tuesday / everything is going good / the tumor seems to be getting smaller!,wich is a good thing. / eating is going good again / i dont need to get the food from the tube anymore / my 3rd chem0 session starts the 28th / but now some music by american (psychedelic?) rock band The Nazz

Through February 2007, Dirk's blog posts were more musical and less medical, with only occasional and more hopeful-sounding updates. At the end of the month he even speculated he may be cancer-free after tests revealed no signs of metastasis. He announced with a grin, "the stump looks great / most of the time i don't have that much pain / only phantom pain" with a link to the Wikipedia entry on "phantom pain."

In_agadda_da_vida More posts of blissful recordings came throughout April and May, among them albums by the Japanese quartet Happy End and Anatolian rocker Baris Manço, as well as a Korean cover of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida." At the end of June, Dirk announced that he'd aced a school exam he finally was well enough to take, but that would be the last real bit of good news. His last music post came on July 24, serving up a "Beatlesesque psych pop" platter from the Singaporean band October Cherries. Then, three days later in a post titled "See You All Again Friday," Dirk shared that he wasn't feeling so well. He had his next-to-last chemo treatment scheduled for the following day, but it never took place. An examination revealed a new tumor and his mother, Janny, posted a message saying "there is nothing they can do for him anymore. At the moment it's going very fast, day by day he is getting worse." She continued,

Dirk asked me to tell you this, and that when he passes away, he wants the comments to be used as a memorial register, and then the blog will be closed. It will stay as a memorial in loving memory of Dirk.

Though not unexpected, Dirk's death, eight days later, was a shock. All the more so because accompanying Janny's brief, mournful announcement were two snapshots of Dirk—a bracing first look at the bright, smiling face behind all the joy and sadness. Outpourings of appreciation and condolence flowed in to Cities on Flame, as Dirk had requested, and the mass of his expansive community of readers, like the young man in the photos, suddenly became visible.

Dirk2Last februari, on the six-month anniversary of Dirk's passing, Janny posted on Cities on Flame a long and heartbreaking letter to her boy. (As with her prior posts, she used his account, so the letter disconcertingly carries his own "posted by Dirk" tag at the bottom.) At the end of the letter Janny announced the creation of a new blog Heaven to Earth With Angel Dirk, that will keep alive the memorial tribute. Earlier this month, videos of Dirk began to appear, including the footage from his funeral.

Cities on Flame With Rock and Roll—and its many earthly treasures—continues to exist. And so, too, in such a strange and wonderful way, does its now heavenly creator.

IK MIS JE
als ze me zouden vragen
wanneer ik jou het meeste mis
dan zeg ik
wanneer ik wakker word
maar ook `s middags mis ik jou
en `s avonds als ik slapen ga
veel meer DAN MEN OOIT DENKT

HEER
mag
ik dirk
pleace
terug
ik MIS
hem
ZOOOOOOOO

mijn kanjer ik mis je zo

Heer
ik
wil
hem
nu
terug!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for sharing this video. Even though we never met, Dirk came to mean a lot to me during the time I read his blog. Not a day goes by that I would not think about him.

VERLATEN

LEEG

Het wil niet lukken
Ook al voel ik het verdriet
De woorden zijn op
Maar de tranen niet

Wat kan ik nog schrijven
Dat ik niet reeds heb gedaan?
Over hoe het voelt
Bij jouw graf te staan?

Over al het verdriet
En alle pijn
Van het jou missen
Over eenzaam zijn?

Het wil niet lukken
Ook al voel ik het verdriet
De woorden zijn op
Maar de tranen niet
EEN STUK DAT MIST

Het klopt niet want
Het is onbetwist
Dat de wereld echt
Een stuk mist

Dus hoe kan het kloppen?
Dat de wereld niet stil staat?
Alsof ze nog heel is
Daarom ongestoord door gaat?

Hoe kan het kloppen?
Dat de aarde nog draait?
Dat de bloemen nog bloeien?
Dat de wind nog waait?

Dat de zon nog op komt?
Iedere morgen
En de vogels nog zingen
Zonder zorgen?

Het klopt niet want
Het is onbetwist
Dat mijn wereld echt
Jouw stuk mist

To Dirk's family and friends,

Dirk gave so much of himself through the music and the world tuned in...not only to hear what he had to share, but to inspire him and each other.

RIP Dirk

This wasn't was I was expecting today. I am so saddened for the loss and will miss him greatly. His enthusiasm introduced me to music I would have never heard otherwise and I'm glad he was able to take the time to share so much of himself here. The main reason I kept coming back here was for his stories. I admired his courage, wit and optimism about his disease. His perspective seemed to help me filter what was most important in an otherwise cluttered world.

I am so sorry to hear this news. Like others here I never met or corresponded with Dirk but feel we would have been friends with our love of music. If not for Dirk I would never have been turned on to Japanese rock of the 60s and 70s and I thank him for this! I will keep these files in my hard drive to share in his memory.
In spite of his condition he still cared to give us all his gift of Cities On Flame. More importantly he showed us what a human being should be, living an unselfish and brave life that should inspire the rest of us.
To his family I am sorry for your loss.
Rest In Peace Dirk!

Oh my God... This is so sad. Dirk, you were an astonishingly generous, infinitely passionate lover of music, and your efforts were very much appreciated. I never knew you, and hardly ever commented on any of your work, but I checked in on you every day. Your aesthetic was spot-on, and it was a pleasure to learn from you.

Rest in Peace,

Tom

Thanx and goodbye Mr. DIRK.

You introduced the music of a lot of wonderful Japan.
I wish to express my gratitude as a Japanese for praising your achievement.
Your blog's visiting became my daily work and half a year passed every day.
I dreamed you visited Japan anyday.
And, I wished to talk about the music of Japan that you had loved with you.

Like so many others here, I'd like to use this space to thank Dirk for his dedication to sharing his favorite music with us. Cities on Flame was such an incredible site for hard-to-find Japanese folk, rock, and many other forms of music. If I could speak with Dirk, I would want to let him know how sorry I am that things had become so tough for him, but that I'm sure he's now resting in a better place. I can only imagine what his parents are going through right now, and I hope they're coping as well as possible with the tremendous loss of such a young, generous man. Kazemachi Roman is playing in remembrance of Dirk. Thanks for everything--you are missed.
